5. The Lone Ranger

Boy, did this movie catch a bad rap in 2013. Not only was it a total commercial bomb at the box office, one of the worst in film history, it also had to endure the onslaught of critical hate from armies of viewers. And the sad thing is…the movie is not as bad as everyone made it out to be. Plagued with production issues, cast and crew have since spoken out about the “flop-hungry” critics who practically wrote their reviews for this film half a year in advance of its release. This film was doomed to fail due to the constant bad press from any and everyone who could get a word in before a film was completed.

Yet, the film was received positively overseas and many notable people in the film community just can not understand the big deal about the hate for The Lone Ranger, and I agree. The film was a fun and enjoyable thrill ride. Everything a summer blockbuster should be. But there was a bandwagon that everyone who thought they were “cool” jumped on that bashed this film’s budget, genre relevance, and production issues. And that’s about it. Sometimes people just want to see something fail and this was a case of that.

Indeed it lagged at times and could have benefited from some tidying up at points, maybe condensing the film’s run time–but not to ruin my value as a film lover, I dare say it was probably one of the best films of the summer. Disney lost so much money on this film which is a shame because it discourages Disney to take certain risk as it pretty much ended their relationship with Jerry Bruckheimer, who I believed produced some of Disney’s funnest films in years even if they were not the best received.

That’s okay because I’m sure The Lone Ranger will grab a cult following at sometime in the near future.
