I write about Disney films because I have a deep love for all things Disney. I selfishly indulge myself in my favorite animated and live-action films from the Mouse like it is nobodies’s business. But even I will admit that despite record-breaking revenue from their films this year, up until November Disney’s year in film has been a more or less lackluster experience. Certainly all releases were fun and were entertaining to some level but when you think that it was not until the eleventh month of the year (as it was for most of Hollywood in 2013) that we received films that were worthy of praise and return visits, we can understand why we may have been left wanting more.
However, the year was not a despairing one. With the acquisition of Marvel we were introduced to more of the action-packed franchises we love. And along side the purchase of Lucasfilm, we know many, many exciting things are yet to come. Between these two juggernauts at the Mouse’s side, along with Pixar and the Studio’s own original projects Disney is still the go to place for guaranteed entertainment. Not to mention, that despite an overall sub-par year for film, Disney still delivered the best of the them all.
So here I look back at 2013 for Disney and rank the films from worst to best, hoping we have some new classics to enjoy for decades to come (and I think we do)–and you can decide if 2013 was or was not one of the better years for Disney in recent memory.
(And in case you are wondering–yes, I will be including Marvel onto this list…why not.)
Honorable Mention
Wings of Life
It’s not that I am a complete Disney nerd that I happen to see every (or near every) Disney studio release each year, they just take such control of cinema that they are impossible to ignore. They deliver so much promise you want to see whatever they produce, that is what makes Disney different from the rest. But I am sad to say that I have not seen Disney’s yearly foray into territories that are not all about massive profit but instead education and simplistic enjoyment.
I am a nature lover and environmentalist at heart but I unfortunately have never taken the time out of my year to venture to any of DisneyNature’s films. But I have no doubt that this documentary was another revealing and beautiful installment into the series that promotes conservation and enlightenment about the world around us.
Since I have not seen this film and it is a documentary, I do not feel it should be judged in the same way as those produced for solely entertainment purposes. So here is it’s honorable mention as a release in 2013.
